// ]]>Who, What, Where, Why, When & How is always a good start.

Perhaps you are reading this because you have a “Why”. Why do I feel tired? Why do I feel irritable? Why do I get an upset stomach? Why do I seem to suffer some form of IBS or Irritable Bowl Syndrome? Why do I keep getting sick? Why do I have ‘Yellow Teeth & Bad Breath?’ Or, I am worried about someone else.

So, let us be Inspector Clouseau and discover what it is that we need to know, if we don’t already know what we do not know to misquote Donald Rumsfeld.

Who are we talking about? Are they fit, fat jolly or sad? Do they exercise a lot, not much or not at all? Do they eat healthily or unhealthily? Are they stressed or unstressed, are they responsible or irresponsible. Are they receptive to change or stuck in their ways. All of the questions and answers will help to distill, in your mind and that of others, a framework for action.

What happened for a person to get the point where he or she is seeking advice? Probably a niggling challenge and one we could deal with today is yellow teeth and bad breath.

Most people associate yellow or stained teeth and bad breath with smoking, possibly combined with drinking alcohol and poor dental hygiene. These are probably contributing factors but it may not be the whole story. Your mouth is swarming with bacteria and just like in the gut, there is good and bad.

We need to encourage the good so, that they displace the bad. You can think of it as a Robin Hood action. Feared by the bad, loved by the good, Robin Probiotic Hood.

Perhaps the most obvious way to control the harmful bacteria is to brush our teeth after meals or, if this is not practical, at least twice per day together with flossing in between the teeth. A tongue scraper is a good idea too.

Since current estimates report that 50-75% of all Americans have gum disease to a greater or lesser extent, it is possibly true for other countries as well. Our oral hygiene is not what it should be and the bad bacteria are multiplying like crazy and taking over our mouths.

The result of harmful bacteria overgrowth is gum disease which, comes in two main flavours: Gingivitis and Periodontitis.

Gingivitis is the precursor of Periodontitis where the symptoms are swollen or bleeding gums which, if left unchecked, will turn into the more serious Periodontitis.

Periodontitis or pyorrhoea is a set of inflammatory diseases affecting the periodontium, i.e., the tissues that surround and support the teeth. Periodontitis involves progressive loss of the alveolar bone around the teeth, and if left untreated, can lead to the loosening and subsequent loss of teeth.

Periodontitis is caused by microorganisms that adhere to and grow on the tooth’s surfaces, along with an overly aggressive immune response against these microorganisms. A diagnosis of periodontitis is established by inspecting the soft gum tissues around the teeth with a probe and by evaluating the patient’s x-ray films to determine the amount of bone loss around the teeth.

This radiograph shows significant bone loss between the two roots of a tooth (black region). The spongy bone has receded due to infection under tooth, reducing the bony support for the tooth.

Apart from your teeth falling out, there is another more pressing reason why we should care about Gingivitis and Periodontitis and that is that the harmful bacteria associated with these conditions can get into your heart via your bloodstream. It may increase your risk of coronary heart disease or lead to endocarditis which, is an infection of the inner lining of the heart that can damage or destroy your heart valves.

No less so with pregnant women who can pass this destructive bacteria originating in their mouths through the placenta and quite possibly, lead to premature birth.

What to do? See your dentist and make sure that you do not have the onset of Gingivitis or Periodontitis. Follow your dentist’s advice with regard to thoroughly cleaning your teeth every day and seek out lifestyle and dietary changes that can prevent the build up of acidity in your body which fosters nasty surprises down the road.

In the same way that probiotics encourage the proliferation of ‘Good’ bacteria in your gut, using probiotics directly in the mouth will do the same thing. This is not a recommendation but it is what the author does. He breaks open a probiotic beadlet and squeezes it on his toothbrush and thoroughly massages his gums.

Research has shown that an ideal combination of bacteria for good oral health and prevention of plaque forming in your heart valves is are derived from Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium genera.

Probiotics, from wherever they are sourced, need to be consumed as fresh as as possible. If you want to do as the author does, you can source probiotics direct here:

http://www.sharethiswith.me/recommends/ProbioticUSA

To avoid wearing your tooth enamel off with toothpaste, use a tooth gel instead. This one comes with bee propolis, a natural anti-biotic that leaps on pathogens as soon as it detects them. Bee propolis (Made by bees) wraps the pathogen bacteria and stops it multiplying. Neat! The aloe vera heals your gums…

Let’s get down dirty to Bowel Town!

Why You Should Know The Three Most Important Things About Crohn’s Disease And Colitis

I know it’s not what you want to talk about, especially over breakfast. So, don’t talk. Just listen… Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin.

What goes up must come down. What goes in must come out. And if you are overweight, then it is likely that you are putting in more than you are letting out. It doesn’t matter what you are putting in, good bad or indifferent, if the equation is not balanced the excess will go somewhere. If you look down, you can probably see where it went.

Ok. You hear it endlessly. You are what you eat. Giving children pizza for breakfast must be the most bizarre, inane and bonkers thing I saw on Jamie Oliver in America. Those children will become as round as a pizza and will not be fit enough to play in your favourite team, ever. They are likely to die young too and it will be the fault of parents who cannot see in front of their collective nose’s. It is they who need to go back to school with their children and learn something about how their body works. You don’t have to be a doctor to understand the basics. Doctors should be paid only when you are healthy and payment withdrawn when you are ill! What a difference that would make, eh? But I digress…

When I say that the pizza babes will die young, it won’t be before they suffer serious, painful disease. For all the protection parents pretend to give their children believing that a child molester is around every corner, their most serious neglect is that of their children’s health. Let’s face it. They are FAT!

One of the most likely causes of premature death is heart and liver disease then complete failure of one or the other. These diseases can be brought on more quickly by conditions termed colitis, ulcerative colitis, piles, hemorrhoids and other conditions of the bowl. IBS (Irritable Bowl Syndrome) or IBD (Inflammatory bowel disease) may include Crohn’s Disease.

“In 1932 Dr. Burril Crohn, along with two other physicians, published the first article about “regional enteritis” in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Later this condition has come to be known as Crohn’s disease.”

How to avoid premature death for yourself and your children must be of serious concern to us all.

Here is what you can look forward to if you contract these conditions. Typical treatments can be as bad as or worse than the disease itself! Ask anyone who has taken steroids or other medications with mind and body-altering side effects, had major, life-changing surgery or endured chemotherapy. Any disease is tough to combat, but Crohn’s disease sufferers receive a three sided assault on their wellbeing.

Crohn’s can strike any area of the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus but it usually affects the lower section of the small intestine and upper part of the colon. It penetrates deep into your intestinal wall. It’s serious.

Chronic inflammation in the intestines can lead to diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever and rectal bleeding. Your intestines become raw and covered with sores. Basically, you need to prevent yourself and those around you from contracting the condition. If improperly digested food is left in the digestive tract for too long, it turns acidic and literally burns holes in your gut, a condition called ‘Leaky Gut’. This has the unpleasant side effect of a person becoming intolerant to certain foods, or foods that contain large amounts of chemicals or substances that irritate the gut wall further and therefore worsen the condition.

You have heard of Gluten Intolerance? The received wisdom on gluten intolerance is that the level of gluten in wheat has risen by over 100% in the last 100 years. In evolutionary terms, this is like having a pint of beer at 4% alcohol content quickly followed by a pint of 100% alcohol. The body just cannot cope. Gluten has become a major irritant in the gut for 21st century consumers of American wheat in particular. Gluten is an elastic protein in wheat which greatly aids the dough forming process and wheat has been systematically bred and modified to give better dough elasticity for industrial convenience. At our expense.

Do not feed yourself with commercially produced, wrapped white bread. It’s useless and can do more harm than good. All grains contain gluten but in oats, rye and older varieties of wheat like spelt, gluten is less and better tolerated by the body. Bread made of sour dough may be better too but ask your speciality baker first.

Now. The three sided attack:

Digestion problems

Immune system slaughterer

Gluten intolerance

We touched on digestion problems and we mentioned gluten intolerance but attacks on the immune system leave you wide open to many other complaints that may turn more serious.

People don’t die of AIDS. People with AIDS die from more common conditions like pnemonia, for which the body has been denuded of defence.

Crohn’s is an autoimmune condition, meaning your immune system sees normal bacteria or molecules in the intestines as dangerous invaders and launches an attack.

Then, just like clockwork, you fly to the loo with inflammation, pain and diarrhoea.

You have heard of so called “Smart Bombs” (The designers of which have probably never considered themselves or their children to be the target for such devices…) well, you can help fight this immune system slaughterer by making your immune system a little smarter. Get Smart!

Having a strong population of probiotic bacteria in your gut helps to encourage more of your immune system’s natural inflammation-fighting cells to form. In addition, probiotics help the other cells in your intestinal tract to treat normal molecules as friends instead of enemies….

What has been repeatedly proven to be effective for countless Crohn’s sufferers is the proper combination of foods. Foods that don’t digest well together puts you in danger of developing the condition that allows Crohn’s disease to take hold. When you eat food combinations that break themselves down completely, you get nice, easy, regular bowel movements and help to minimize intestinal irritation.

You can find out more about food combining here.

Finally, I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to mention one of the most important PRE biotic substances ~ aloe vera. Taken internally, it is perfect for nourishing the intestinal wall in the same way that it nourishes your skin. Aloe vera only works in the layer of cells called the dermis. Your ‘Dermis’ is the largest organ in the body. It extends under your skin and through every orifice… It is what your gut is made of. You will find aloe from the sites above.

Forever Active Probiotic

The Essential Daily Supplement

One hears the terms Prebiotics and Probiotic and I was confused about what they mean exactly. Whenever we talk about live cultures in food, yoghurt is the one that comes to mind. A scout round the internet reveals a bigger picture.

Prebiotics usually refers to dietary supplements that contain nutrients that serve as food for certain bacteria in our digestive system. Probiotics are usually freeze dried bacteria in amounts likely to remain viable in our digestive tract which, aid digestion.

Some examples of foods that contain Prebiotics are onions, garlic and Jerusalem Artichokes. Shop bought Yogurt may no longer contain live healthy Probiotic bacteria cultures because they have been destroyed during the manufacturing process. However, the market demands live cultures in yogurt so, suppliers emphasis the nature of their product on the packaging and these yogurts are sold at a premium.

All probiotic products require refrigeration, except one. Refrigeration ensures the maximum potency and stability. Even so, there is generally a 2-4% decrease in the bacterial count by month so, fresh consumption is best.

A summary of the advantages of consuming both pre and probiotics are:

Probiotics help your digestion

Probiotics enhance your nutrient absorption

Probiotics strengthen your immune system

Probiotics help fight vaginal & urinary tract infections particularly important during pregnancy and birth. Babies born vaginally receive their first exposure to microbes during delivery. The vaginal tract contains microflora that are ingested by the baby as it comes down the birth canal.

Yogurt is also linked to strengthening the cardiovascular system so, there is a double imperative to consume some yogurt, the best yogurt, every day.

Probiotics help break down proteins, carbohydrates and fats and can help decrease gas, bloating and constipation plus, more efficient digestion helps food move out of your stomach quicker. That means less chance of acid rising up in to your throat. An acid reflux

Why is it important?
80% of your immune system is in your gut. The beneficial bacteria that line your intestines fight off dangerous invaders you ingest plus, resisting illnesses means less need for medications and their side effects which, if you were pregnant, can travel through the placenta and be ingested by your baby too.

I mentioned that all probiotics need to to be stored in refrigerators except one. As probiotics themselves are quite fragile, Forever Active Probiotic uses an exclusive, patented encapsulation technology that protects the probiotics then releases a unique combination of six beneficial strains of microbes only after they reach the desired destination of the intestines. The probiotics in Forever Active Probiotic® are derived from Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium genera; the species are:

Lactobacillus Acidophilus
Bifidobacterium Longum
Bifidobacterium Lactis
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus
Lactobacillus Bulgaricus
Lactobacillus Plantarum

Forever Active Probiotic® is the only shelf-stable, 6-strain probiotic on the market today that requires no refrigeration. And what’s great about Forever Active Probiotic is that it works in tandem with our patented aloe vera. Aloe acts as a “prebiotic,” which fosters the growth of and provides the ideal environment for the probiotic to function. So whether your goal is to promote a healthy digestive system or enhance nutrient absorption and immune function, add Forever Active Probiotic to your daily supplement program.

10 things you already know about how to stop craving for food…

“I return from the office. I open the fridge… Something drops on the floor. KIDS! But. It is difficult to see where the item dropped. Something is in the way. I move… Ah! I spy a half open yoghurt pot and the yoghurt has splashed over my shoes and on the floor. I bend down to pick it up. I get out of breath… I squat. Something rips. My CK’s!. Oh blast and I don’t have a clean pair to change into…

I haul myself up and look into the mirror. Hmm. Can’t see the split but who’s mountain is that on top of my legs???”

It’s not your fault. It’s stress eating. “Oh, that’s alright then. Must keep a roof over my head so it goes with the territory. Right?”

Stress eating results in a number of changes to the way the body is structured, not least and the most obvious is your girth, and it can also worsen digestive problems like acid reflux, IBS symptoms, gas, bloating and diarrhea.

“Oh. Well. I do suffer a bit it’s true and I would rather be size 4 than 14 but I’m only having a few nibbles now and again…”

Stress eaters KNOW that they should stop eating, but that’s easier said than done for most. Some may desperately try to resist the beckoning of the refrigerator, pantry or vending machine but then break down in that moment of weakness and give in.

The good news is you CAN break free of stress eating. But first it’s important to understand what’s going on when you instinctively look for comfort food…

There is a protective hormone connection and it stems from the “Fight or Flight” reaction our body is programmed to make. In a dangerous situation, our body gears up for protection by releasing two hormones; adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones mobilise fat and carbohydrates stored in the body for quick energy.

Once the stress is over, adrenaline seeps away but cortisol hangs around for a while to help refuel your body and bring it back to balance. One of the ways it does this is by pricking your appetite and suggests that you replace the carbohydrates and fats you used.

What is the price we pay for chronic stress?

When you are under longstanding chronic stress, your cortisol levels are raised and remain high all the time. This creates a buildup of abdominal fat; our primitive emergency energy supply and you would normally see this happen during the winter months. It also leads to depressed immune function, low thyroid function, problems with controlling blood sugar, impaired memory and concentration, adrenal fatigue “Burnout” and eventually, chronic illness. Nice eh?

With continual stress and high cortisol levels, you are susceptible to conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, blood clots and colon cancer so, we have to break the cycle. This is where we have to make a bit of an effort. No Pain. No Gain…

Here are 10 things that you can easily do:

Wait 10 minutes before giving in to a craving ~ If you can distract yourself by answering an email, doing a load of laundry, making a phone call, feeding the cat or running an errand, you may forget about your craving. We live in hope…

One should never go hungry or skip meals ~ You have heard this before I know but hunger can trigger intense cravings for sugar, so be sure to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. If you are busy and miss a meal, take a little snack of raw vegetables.

And of course, eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables because they are full of antioxidants and phytochemicals that eliminate the free radicals caused by stress.

Drink green tea ~ Not only is green tea alkaline (which is good for your pH), but it contains the amino acid theanine, which tranquilizes your brain and helps control cortisol levels.

Turn off the Tele… ~ TV exposes you to endless numbers of food commercials that are specifically designed to trigger cravings.

Sleep more ~ Fatigue and sleep deprivation lead to carbohydrate cravings because carbs are a major source of energy when you feel exhausted.

Get some exercise ~ Well, everyone tells you this so, it must be true? Exercise counteracts stress and cravings by releasing endorphins, the hormone that produces good feelings. Walk round the block. do it once per day then twice then three times. Your neighbours will begin to wonder… At how healthy you are beginning to look. Aim for mid day too to get maximum vitamin D from the sun.

Drink lots of water ~ You have heard this over and over. Every system of your body depends on water to remove wastes, bring nutrients and oxygen to the cells, aid in digestion and maintain normal metabolism. In addition, many people mistake thirst for hunger, so what may seem like a craving to you could be your body telling you to drink more water. You should aim to drink at least 8-10 cups of water a day.

Eat foods with anti-stress vitamins and minerals ~ These include foods with vitamins A, B6, C and E as well as potassium, magnesium, calcium and zinc. Here are some good sources of each:

Vitamin A: Carrots, sweet potatoes, greens, bell peppers

Vitamin B6: Bananas, salmon, potatoes, chicken, turkey and spinach

Vitamin C: Strawberries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, oranges, cauliflower

Vitamin E: Sunflower seeds, almonds, olives, spinach, blueberries, greens

Potassium: Yams, spinach, avocado, lentils, winter squash, bananas

Magnesium: Black beans, navy beans, salmon, spinach, sesame seeds, halibut

Calcium: Greens, sesame seeds, dairy

Zinc: Lean beef or lamb, turkey, green peas, shrimp, sesame seeds

And the all important number 10: ~ Make sure your digestion is running like a Rolls Royce. All the healthy food in the world will do you and your stress levels no good if your digestion is incomplete and inefficient. Poor digestion not only worsens stress-related problems like acid reflux, gas, bloating and constipation, but it also reduces your ability to absorb stress-reducing nutrients from your foods. So, the hunger bell will continue to toll.

Oh! Happy Healthy Holidays

The Geese and Us; we are getting fat and lovin’ it

Yup. We do not stand idly by and watch others tuck in to festive fare without being tempted ourselves. There was a time when this was the most extravagant meal of the year. I suspect that for some of us though, Christmas Dinner can be a bit of an anti-climax, no matter who has cooked it. Yes. It is the culinary skills that bring it off and if those skills are below par somewhat, we can always joke about it or joke about the hapless host…

However. No longer are we waiting for this priceless meal for 364 days, we are eating as much every day and we are getting FAT.

Jackie Mason is quoted as saying “It’s no longer a question of staying healthy. It’s a question of finding a sickness you like!” We like this sickness. Not so a man who had to stand 7 hours on a flight because the 400lb man next to him took up his seat as well…

The picture provided is not the same man but comes from the Daily Mail… Read it online! Yeah. And take this as a warning. A recent police study found that you’re much more likely to get shot by a fat cop if you run ~ Dennis Miller. “Let’s get these cops outa their car and do some proper foot patrol…”

That’s all well and good and we can have a laugh about it but guess which vital organ in your body may be suffering more than most. Your Heart? Yup. What else? Ah… Your liver. Yes. Your liver. You have heard the expression “Feeling Liverish? I bet. Let’s then look at this umbrella shaped piece of magic in more detail. What does it do exactly? Well, it has a good shot at removing toxins, digesting fat and regulating sugar. Aha… More attention needed.

Now. Just supposing this 4Ib critter is overworked and underpaid. Hmmm? Now you have the prospect of this little lot, individually or all together, liver disorders; symptoms:

Chemical sensitivities

Headaches

Pain in the right side

Weak tendons, ligaments and muscles

Metallic taste in mouth

Pale stools

Loss of energy; fatigue

PMS

Allergies

Digestive problems

Constipation

Skin problems

What may cause this? We are what we eat and drink after all and if we abuse our natural intake by ingesting environmental pollution, prescription and non prescription drugs, chemical food additives, chlorinated water, empty calorie soda, coffee, household chemicals and pesticides amongst many, they all dump loads of stress on our livers.

What does our liver do exactly?

Your liver performs more than 500 unique bodily functions that are critical to life and health as we know it. Here are four of the most important:

The liver manufactures bile for the digestion of fats. In addition to breaking down fats, bile helps your body absorb vitamins A, D, E and K, and turns beta-carotene into vitamin A. Bile also is the “exit vehicle” for toxins that your liver filters out of your system. The toxin-drenched bile gets absorbed by fiber in your intestines and is dumped… Now, if your liver isn’t working right and bile secretion is low, toxins end up staying in there too long and they accumulate. As a result, your liver can actually become constipated just like your colon can.

The liver makes & breaks down cholesterol, estrogen and testosterone. Most people are misinformed as to where cholesterol comes from. Although you do get some cholesterol from food (animal fat), the bulk of it is made by your liver. If your liver is working properly, it converts cholesterol that you get from your diet into bile and temporarily slows down its own production of cholesterol until more is needed. The health of your liver is an indicator of whether you’ll have a cholesterol problem and an increased risk of heart disease. And as far as hormones go, poor liver function can lead to hormone imbalances in both men and women. Conditions such as PMS, fibrocystic breast disease, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, and cancer of the breast, ovaries and uterus are associated with elevated estrogen, and that can be the result of the liver not breaking the estrogen down like it should.

The liver controls the regulation of blood sugar. Your liver works with the pancreas and adrenal glands to regulate your blood sugar. If too much sugar comes quickly to the liver from your intestines (like when you eat refined carbohydrates), it converts the sugar to triglycerides, some of which are stored as fat and others put into your blood to be reconverted to glucose in your cells. This cycle is crucial because it’s the primary way the sugar you eat can be controlled and slowly released into your blood. If your liver isn’t carrying out this cycle properly, you are a candidate for chronic overproduction of insulin, type II diabetes and increased fat storage and production of cholesterol, otherwise known as obesity and a heart disease risk.

The liver filters the blood and removes toxins. About 4 pints of blood pass through your liver Every Single Minute for detoxification. As long as your liver stays healthy, it can quickly break down 99% of the toxins you take in before they enter your blood stream and your tissues. These include toxins such as coffee, alcohol, nicotine, drugs, pesticides and food additives. It also includes the toxins that you create inside from poorly digested food molecules that have seeped out of your intestines ~ a condition known as leaky gut. Without our filtering and detox mechanism, it’s not a matter of if, but when, we will get sick, develop a disease and die. Turn up our toes. Rest for a very long time. EXPIRE!

So. the rule is look after your liver and your liver will look after you. Your liver may even appear to function ok at 70% dead itself and one may delude one’s self that one is healthy. If today you feel fine and tomorrow you keel over, the abuse that you have subjected your liver to may be the cause due to liver sclerosis, for example. Being over-weight may be a symptom of liver failure and a very clear warning that premature death, The Grim Reaper, is stalking you.

OK. So, what to do? Well, as an independent distributor of food supplements, you might expect me to point to our products and recommend them as suitable for you to use in order to address a perceived problem. No can do. I am not a doctor. I don’t know, for example, whether or not you have allergies or intolerance to various substances and whether you are taking prescription or non prescription drugs and so on. What I can do, however, is look to the science and well documented and proven facts that we learn as we grow up. Stinging nettle stings may be soothed by rubbing a Dock Leaf on the affected area. We know that aloe vera is commonly thought of throughout the world as the ‘burns plant’ and the soothing inner gel is applied to the skin to counteract the effects of skin burn. It grows in hot countries. There’s a blessing!

If you are over-weight, it may not be your fault entirely. You might have thyroid problems or any number of other conditions that need addressing and your first stop must be your doctors surgery. Having said that, for the majority of people, common sense dictates that you are putting in more than you are taking out. You are probably not drinking enough water and you are probably not taking enough exercise. These simple truths need to be recognised and in order to give you a helping hand, we do have a range of products and strategies that will assist you and have been proven to work. For example, I have named my weight-loss website Size14To4 because one of our distributors actually achieved that result using our products and following a regime that we prescribe. It’s available to you too. See the links below for your country to shop or check out the website for full information.
